From Meteorites to the Moon: The Best Space-Themed Perfumes

Ever wondered what outer space smells like? Various perfume designers created scents within our endless universe. Reminiscent of the moonlight, including real meteorite pieces or using the accounts of real astronauts – there is a wide range of fragrances on the market that are in some way space-themed. Have fun with this list and let me know if there are any other perfumes that are missing!

Short note: I did not give any information on whether these scents are marketed as men’s, women’s, or unisex scents, since I believe these destinctions don’t really make sense. The scents and notes should give you and idea whether it’s something you’d enjoy or not.

Eau de Space & Eau de Luna – Smell of Space, LLC

Source: Eau de Space

Eau de Space is a fragrance developed to replicate the scent of outer space. Originally created for NASA in collaboration with chemist Steve Pearce, the fragrance was intended to help astronauts train for space missions by familiarizing them with the unique smells they might encounter during spacewalks. The scent is described as a mix of metallic and smoky notes, reminiscent of seared steak, gunpowder, raspberries, and rum. It has a strange and intriguing quality, evoking the unique chemistry of outer space. In 2020, Eau de Space was made available to the public through a Kickstarter campaign, sparking curiosity and excitement among space enthusiasts.

Similarly, Eau de Luna aims to capture the smell of the moon based on accounts from Apollo Astronauts, which according to their website has been described as “a unique smell, that’s hard to describe…like spent gunpowder”. Of course, they could not smell the moon while being on it, but the dust that has been clinging to their suits.

Jupiter – Toli Perfume

Source: Toli

More an art project than an everyday perfume, Toli released Jupiter through a Kickstarter campaign and produced quite the unique scent. The designer Apostolos Charisis was inspired by the three substances layering Jupiter, which are ammonia, sulphur and cyanide – not the first association one has regarding pleasant smells. It was not designed with funcitonality in mind, but to push boundaries instead of re-using the same common scents in fragrance we see all the time. It should “transport” the user to the planet, and after the initial wave, it settles into almond, saffron and musk notes.

The perfumes are especially themed around constellations and the most beautiful stars in them. Each perfum, comes with a lengthy description and backstory as to which star for example it represents, what this star stands for and how this is encapsulated in the scent. Also, each collection has a very detailed backstory. I recommend checking out everything on your own, since the attention to detail is quite lovely.
