The 32nd General Assembly of the IAU is set to take place from August 6 to 15, 2024, in Cape Town, South Africa. This will be the first time the event is held on the African continent, marking a significant milestone in its more than 100-year history.
The General Assembly will feature a comprehensive scientific program, including over 2000 presentations across more than 300 sessions. These sessions will feature a wide range of astronomical topics, from symposia and focus meetings to division meetings and public outreach activities. Notable highlights include discussions on the development of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its impact on radio astronomy, as well as various sessions dedicated to astronomy education and outreach in Africa (American Astronomical Society) (International Astronomical Union) (SKAO).
In a historic move, the event will also adopt an open-access format for the first time, allowing individuals worldwide to access live talks remotely without charge. This initiative aims to promote inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that students, researchers, and the general public can engage with the latest developments in astronomy (IAU Office of Astronomy for Development).
